Church Services
Morning Service : Sunday
9:30am - followed by morning tea just outside the Church.
Our Sunday Morning Service follows a format commonly called “blended
worship,” which combines some of the best elements of traditional
formal worship together with those of the more relaxed contemporary
style. We aim for our church to like an extended
family and
so encourage the whole spectrum of ages to share together.
Sometimes we have services, which are more formal than others such as
at quarterly Communion (on the first Sunday of March, June, September
and December) whilst at other time we are more relaxed in a truly
‘family’ service with more youth participation.
Our
1954 Node Pipe Organ (enhanced and modified over the years) still gives
a full and glorious sound. We are privileged to
have had
many top organists play at St Luke’s over the years.
Currently we
enjoy the organ preludes and postludes played before the Service
and afterwards as we make our way out the door for morning
tea
and a chat. Our Organist Sophie Gerber brings us a
mixture
of fine classical and religious pieces of music and accompanies the
hymns in a way that enhances our worship together.
Children
normally share in the first 10 – 15 minutes of the Service and then go
out for Sunday School while the adults go on to hear a Biblically based
Sermon – either topical or as an exposition of what the
Lord teaches.
We also have a ‘Praise’ section where we sing a few more modern
Christian songs and choruses on the piano, accompanied by guitar and or
drums.
During the
school terms when Sunday School is in full-swing we have a “Kid’s Spot”
early in the service where we either hear a children’s story
or
an interesting object lesson. However most frequently we have
a
short puppet show featuring ‘Binko’ who is well known amongst the
children around the district schools.
Northside
Bible
Talks 5.30pm
This
is our new our evening gathering. Whilst it is for all ages
to
share and enjoy, Sunday Evening Northside Bible Talks is contemporary
in style, with modern Christian songs, with the music by our band, and
led by younger people.
This service is temporary recessed until 2010.
Church On
Wednesday
Second Wednesday of
each month at 7:15pm followed by an informal supper in the foyer. Today
many people have to work or have family commitments on
Sundays. Others want a pick-up in the middle of the
week –
a time of praise and sharing.
Church
on Wednesday (COW) is designed just for that purpose. We
commence
at 7.15pm and are finished just after 8.00pm. COW features a
number of praise type songs old and new accompanied on the
piano. The result is enthusiastic singing followed by a
short
time of sharing of life’s blessings and concerns.
The
Devotional is short and snappy – less than 10 minutes. A
great
time of fellowship over a seasonal supper concludes the evening.
